Organized by MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation), Kalidas Festival is celebrated in November every year at Nagpur. Kalidas Festival is basically a musical and dance show, which also has performances by theatre artists. Ramtek town, which is located in the Nagpur district and is known for its association with Lord Rama is the exact venue of the festival where it is celebrated with high enthuses. This is why because Ramtek is the place where Kalidas wrote his famous poetry Meghdoot, inspired by the beauty and serenity of the surroundings.
A great Sanskrit poet and dramatist Kalidas is famous for his historical drama, Shakuntalam, and for the epic poem, Meghdoot. The Kalidas Festival brings back memories of the golden gupta period ((4th century AD) of the Vidarbha region. In the literary work of Kalidas, Ramgiri or Ramtek which is popularly known today is the place that inspired Kalidas and its beauty features predominantly.
To memorize this auspicious era and poet Kalidas, every year, in November, some of the greatest luminaries of music, dance and drama perform their art in the picturesque setting of Ramtek, celebrating its magnificent heritage over two exhilarating days and nights.
Promoting the Vidarbha region and its rich heritage throughout India as well as abroad is another aim of celebrating this festival. So, don’t forget to see the festival whenever you come to be in or around Nagpur in the month of November, and be a part of its celebrations.
